What is Body-Checking and how can we reduce it?


Body checking is the chronic and repetitive inspection of your body.

It has become an increasingly frequent behaviour in today's society.


While occasional self-reflection is natural, constant body checking can profoundly affect mental and physical well-being.


The pressure to conform to unrealistic beauty standards can be overwhelming in a world dominated by social media and filtered images.


Body checking often stems from a desire to attain or maintain a particular body image fueled by societal expectations and comparison with others. Recognising the fine line between cultivating confidence and succumbing to harmful behaviours is crucial.


Positive body image is essential for mental health and self-esteem. Embracing your body and appreciating its unique qualities can lead to a happier and more fulfilling life. However, when body checking becomes obsessive, it can contribute to anxiety, depression, and even the development of disordered eating or eating disorders.


So, how do we strike a balance?


  • Explore the Body Neutrality movement: Instead of searching for and focusing on flaws, channel your thoughts to the positive aspects of your body. Acknowledge its strength, resilience, and the incredible things it allows you to do.

  • Review your social media: Constant exposure to doctored images on social media can distort reality. Take breaks from social media or reassess the accounts you follow so that your feed includes diverse body types, promoting a healthier perspective.

  • Seek support: If body checking is affecting your mental health, consider seeking support from friends, family, or a Body Image Coach. Understanding the patterns that have injected negative body image is crucial for finding freedom.

  • Practice self-compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and understanding. Remember that everyone has imperfections; we are all perfectly flawed. Real beauty goes beyond physical appearance.

  • Cultivate healthy habits: Focus on habits that contribute to your overall well-being, such as regular, enjoyable movement, balanced nutrition, and a good sleep pattern. These habits can promote a positive body image while improving your self-esteem.

It's essential to prioritise self-love and self-acceptance and seek support when needed. By embracing a more positive and realistic perspective, we can navigate the thin line between confidence and concern, resulting in a nurturing and appreciative relationship with our bodies.
